Welcome to our next CEO, Mark Larson

Updated: Jun 11, 2019

We are excited about our next chapter with Mark Larson as our incoming Chief Executive Officer.

Mark joins City Education Partners with a track record of seeking educational partnerships and innovations that help children regardless of what school they attend. One recent example is the college access partnership he developed between KIPP and SAISD.

Mark is a proven education champion. His commitment, like City Education Partners, is to public schools that work for all children. Sixteen years ago, he founded KIPP in San Antonio (now part of the KIPP Texas network), which encompasses 55 Pre-K-12 schools serving more than 29,000 students across Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. In his new role, Mark will further leverage work with ISDs and public charters, and he brings an unwavering personal passion for exemplary education for ALL San Antonio students.

Current Executive Director, Joel Harris, is transitioning to pursue faith based nonprofit work and announced his departure to the board of directors in February 2019. City Education Partners established a diverse selection committee made up of local men and women community leaders and the board, leading to the selection of Mark Larson as incoming CEO beginning in July 2019.

Founded in 2015, City Education Partners is a nonprofit organization dedicated to high quality public education for San Antonio’s urban core students. City Education Partners has leveraged partnerships with philanthropy, urban districts and public charters to make grants that create new schools (Advanced Learning Academy/SAISD), resource new model campuses (Relay Lab Schools/Ogden Elementary/SAISD), and scholarship urban teachers (Trinity University, Relay Graduate School of Education, Teach For America).

In addition, City Education Partners has launched citywide programs that: recruit educators to urban public schools (Educate210.org); provide design support for education entrepreneurs starting public schools (Innovative Schools Fellowship); and provide information about all San Antonio public schools for families with the San Antonio School Finder. Lastly, City Education Partners is privileged to partner with and resource numerous education-focused community based organizations such as Unicity, Urban Faith Mission and Youth Transitioning Into Adulthood.

For the 2019-2020 school year, CEP is looking forward to a range of new grant programs with SAISD in support of the Advanced Learning Academy and the development of ten new teachers and ten new principals for the district with Trinity University. We are also supporting an expanded cohort of new Teach for America Corps members for SAISD schools.
